Fan Favorites Show!

This week we Facebooked and tweeted and called and shouted and asked and begged and tried to find out some of your favorite segments from the show in the past several months. Thanks so much to everyone for all your responses! While Dave is out of town being so faaaancy at SingStrong, Christopher brings you some of YOUR very favorites. We hope you enjoy!

This is Not an Instrument 7/26/09 — Denise Reis sings a better trumpet than pretty much everyone.

Head 2 Head 8/23/09 — Christopher pits the Cornell Chordials against UPenn Off the Beat in a battle for the best take on Imogen Heap’s “The Moment I Said It.”

Names You Should Know 7/5/09 — If you don’t know the name Gene Puerling, then listen up! As the brain behind The Hi-Lo’s and the Singers Unlimited, he’s the original king of vocal and a cappella arranging.

Girl Power 12/13/09 — R&B lady legends Destiny’s Child bring their typical sass, style, and power to “Carol of the Bells.” Ohmygoodness.

Album Review 10/18/09 — The Real Group’s most recent CARA-decorated record The Real Album blew away Dave and Christopher, and is certainly worth a second take! (and third and fourth and ninth and fiftieth…)

Final Thought 9/13/09 — Top Ten Signs You’re an Aca-addict.

Album Review Despite its flaws, the boys really like Ithaca College all-female group Premium Blend’s third album Ten. The solos and arrangements really stand out, but the percussion is a mixed bag. The potential for their next record is through the roof.

Competition Update It may be January, but it’s time to start the spring competition season! CARA nom’s are on their way, Harmony Sweepstakes applications are due, and the Varsity Vocals competitions have already begun. Dave and Christopher highlight groups to watch for in your ICHSA and ICCA aca-brackets.

Classical Corner Christopher declares that even if you don’t love Renaissance music, you’ll still probably like Lumen Valo.

Names You Should Know Bobby McFerrin. The voice.

New segment! Did You Know? Prolific music writer and critic Catherine Lewis makes her Mouth Off debut with a new guest segment highlighting the interesting history of frequently covered songs in a cappella. This week, Catherine traces the path of “Feelin’ Good” from its musical theatre roots through various interpretations to Michael Buble.

Album Review Mëdlz is a successful pro all-female group, which by itself is worthy of good press. But unfortunately on their latest album aufgetaucht, the group’s icy cool groove is overshadowed by some bland repetition and a bit of an identity crisis.

	<itunes:summary>
Sing-Off Update Dave and Christopher offer their thoughts on the success of the Sing-Off, the set, the judges, the groups, the results, and everything in between. Noteworthy’s co-directors Amy and Courtney react to the once-in-a-lifetime experience. Fans offer their predictions on the result.

Cool Chord of the Week Holiday a cappella singing is a cottage industry. Dave points out that even if holiday singers can’t get too crazy with an arrangement, they sure can milk the chords for all they’re worth. Crimson 4 and Ricky Parkinson are a prime example.

Arrangement Spotlight Christopher says his favorite Christmas song is “O Holy Night,” and one of his favorite arrangements is the tasty version by Sonos (ONLY AVAILABLE IN THE U.K.!).

Check out their version of “Al Hanissim.”

Album Review Cluster has done it again with Christmas Present, taking holiday classics (and an original!) and infusing them with new, sulky, tasty, meaningful, gravity-defying life. Christopher dies yet again.

Final Thought Courtesy of Cluster, Dave and Christopher give every listener the gift of vocal brass. “Jingle Bells” is one of the best tracks of the year.

ALL FEMALE EPISODE!!

For today’s show, the boys showcase some of the finest a cappella to come out of all-female groups across the country and across the globe!

My New Girlfriend Dave is crazy about the beauty, talent and charisma of the red-headed force from the UNCG Sapphires, the lovely Blair Baldwin.

Arrangement Spotlight Christopher can’t contain all of the superlatives when talking about the fabulous, amazing, wonderful, gorgeous, engaging, remarkable, exciting and very good arrangement of “In The Waiting Line” from the UO Divisi’s Roots.

Young and Original Nabby Parkinson’s reinterpretation “Lord, I Would Follow Thee” breathes beautiful new life into an old hymn and cements her position as a talented, original and upcoming songwriter. (And her Star Spangled Banner ain’t so bad either.)

Names You Should Know Christopher’s ongoing a cappella education bus makes a stop in San Francisco as he shares a bit about the quirky, silly, and important songs of Mary Schmary, one of the first all-female pro groups of the modern era.

Around The World In a new segment premiere, Dave tells us about the amazing ladies that make up the famed Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares from Bulgaria. Eastern Europe is where it’s at.

Album Review: Houses Kill – JMU Bluestones
The guys discuss the newest release from the JMU beauties- Christopher thinks the content’s excellence stands alone but wants more intense mixing, and Dave wants groups to fix some bass lines and use the full breadth of studio capabilities to do more than capture the live sound.

<itunes:summary>Around the Horn Duwende claims Casual Harmony’s Aaron Boykin as their newest dude, Boston-based Overboard’s Beatles tribute Help! is FREE, A Cappella helps a man with Alzheimers (seriously, read this right now), AcaTunes might release an iPhone app?, and the Sing Off lineup is announced! Dave basically couldn’t be more proud that BYU Noteworthy is among the contenders!

Head-2-Head Christopher gets down and dirty with two stellar versions of Taxi Ride’s “Get Set”. It’s an artistic brawl between the Northwestern Undertones and the Stanford Harmonics (thanks James Ranson!).
[Edit: Both songs are available on iTunes here: Undertones - http://bit.ly/7kQ9Jb and Harmonics - http://bit.ly/4JjVpw]

My New Girlfriend Noteworthy-love abounds as Dave tells us about the mega-talented songwriter, producer, engineer, singer, teacher, directer and Mouth Off! theme song writer, the lovely Catherine Papworth.

In Your Earbuds Of COURSE Christopher’s been all about the new GaGa, but the new Norah Jones is moody and sophisticated and playing on repeat in his earbuds.

Album Review This time, the boys are more yin and yin as they discuss the latest release Twist from University of North Carolina Chapel Hill all-male supergroup, the Clef Hangers. This meaty album is high quality, squeaky clean and great fun, but could maybe stand for a more sensitive touch.

Sexypella Christopher loves playlists, and UPenn Counterparts “Volcano” is a perennial favorite on his sexypella playlist.

[Correction: During the SoJam wrap-up, we played a clip from Aural Pleasure's yet-to-be-released track "Hallelujah." Because VocalSource and Ed Boyer have a big hand in the album, we assumed Ed had mixed that track, when in fact it was mixed by Bill Hare.
Hey listeners! We had a tremendously fun weekend at SoJam. It was a thrill to interact with so many of you and to meet so many new friends. Stay tuned next week for a more complete wrap-up of the event, complete with audio clips of some of our favorite moments. Meanwhile, we hope you enjoy this week’s show!

My New Boyfriend Christopher is crushing BIGTIME on the voice, creativity, and accomplishments (and face) of Joseph Bates.

Listener Mailbag Another take on why the ICCA West keeps dominating the competition, a re-hash of the boys’ review of Basix Diversity and the role of original music in pro a cappella, and a sleewww of comments and emails trying to convince Christopher that the a cappella community can take ownership of the hit Fox show Glee.

Young and Original “As You Go” by the Duke Pitchforks is an incredible example of students writing great original a cappella music.

Music from the Future Though the album won’t be released for a couple more weeks, Dave gazes into his crystal ball and predicts that the University of Michigan Dicks & Janes’ new album Acousticophilia will be extremely not terrible.

Album Review Brandeis VoiceMale’s latest release Suit Up. offers some of the best solos the boys have ever heard from an all-male college group. Christopher isn’t in love with the song selection, which of course means Dave is. Both agree that the arrangements are sometimes too thick like a long, heavy meal. Christopher wants a salad.

SoJam Special

In this special theme show, Dave and Christopher feature groups that have appeared and will appear at the world-class SoJam A cappella Festival, sponsored by CASA and co-sponsored by Mouth Off. This year’s SoJam will take place in Durham, North Carolina, on Nov. 6-8, 2009. Learn more about the weekend-long event here; the collegiate competition produced by Christopher here; and the workshops taught by Dave, Christopher, and other pros here.

Musical Mouthful Firedrill! is always a dreamy audience favorite at SoJam. Dave loves their FEH.

This is Not an Instrument The a cappella community met soulful music geniuses Naturally 7 at SoJam 2007. They sing trumpets better than Christopher.

My New Girlfriend(s) Dave is an a cappella playa… he has TWO new girlfriends this week! Abbey Janes from Duwende is that confident lady you just wanna get with. And Fork’s Mia Renwall is beyond hot. Her curves and high cheekbones are right up Dave’s alley. The whole conversation is completely lost on Christopher.

Names You Should Know Dave Sperandio founded SoJam on a shoestring, and under his direction and vision it has become the UberEvent in the a cappella world. Christopher lauds Dio’s work with transit, his hip hop Timbaland ways, and his work creating the VocalSource network of a cappella production pros. Today he runs diovoce studios and serves as CASA’s Director of Festivals and Events. And he’s just a good dude.

Cool Chord of the Week Eclipse, the boy band of the a cappella world, will be singing their cool chords at SoJam 2009. Dave is already getting goosebumps, especially when listening to their latest album Grateful Praise.

Sexypella The House Jacks are the original rock band without instruments, and they’ll bring their sexy music to Durham, NC, this year to headline at SoJam 2009.

20 Questions Christopher asks 20 questions of 20 people involved in SoJam. These producers, performers, and participants share their love for the event and urge you to be there this year.

The Good Ol’ Days Christopher thinks this old recording of “In The Hall Of The Mountain King” is rad, but has no idea who performs it! A free copy of SONOSings to the person who figures it out and posts/emails the answer!

Arrangement Spotlight What do you get when you put Ed Boyer, the Tufts Beelzebubs, Bill Hare and Peter Gabriel in an aca-blender? You get the arrangement perfection that is “Diggin’ In The Dirt”.

Album Review Dave thinks you should pay attention the debut album by moody, pale sextet Sonos. Christopher thinks that they sing the music in his heart. Both think the fact that they’re signed to a major record label is exactly what the a cappella community needs!

Voices Only Special

In recognition of the collegiate a cappella compilation Voices Only 2009 being released this past week, the boys dedicate this episode to some discussion of the double-disc compilation, including some of its standout tracks.

Cool Chord of the Week The high tenors of the UNCG Spartones really know how to wail. Their rendition of Chicago’s “You’re the Inspiration” has some very cool chords.

Sexypella UMD Faux Paz + Tat Tong + Kanye West’s “Flashing Lights” = sexified magic.

My New Girlfriend It was love at first sound when Dave heard Kristen Jones of the Harvard Callbacks singing “Jane Doe” opb Alicia Keys.

I Just Gotta Say Christopher gays it up in a rant about the Spice Girls, as he praises the Wellesley Tupelos‘ rendition of “2 Become 1.”

Arrangement Spotlight In an unusual arrangement spotlight, Dave has kind words for the thoughtful arranging style of Christopher Diaz in FSU All-Night Yahtzee’s version of Ben Folds’ “Missing the War.”

Interview Christopher sits down with Corey Slutzky, the producer of Voices Only, to discuss the compilation’s origins, purpose, and audience. Corey also offers insightful thoughts on some of the latest developments in a cappella.

Created just five years ago in northern Utah, A Cappellastock has already become one of the largest a cappella events anywhere. Drawing almost 3,000 fans to the Ogden City Amphitheatre, the event displays some of the country’s most impressive a cappella talent on a big outdoor stage in a quality production that appeals to young and old, rich and poor.

In this special episode, Dave and Christopher talk about the event, visit with the producers, and feature music by the talented acts appearing at this year’s event, which happens this Saturday, August 22.

Listener Mailbag Alex from the Tufts Amalgamates wrote in asking for Christopher and Dave’s opinion of production effects and studio tricks when creating an a cappella recording. Dave and Christopher give their suggestions, but what do *you* think? Drop a comment below.
[Editor's note: Great article on CASA.org from Bill Hare explaining his point of view on this topic.]

My New Boyfriend Christopher is currently dating the voice of Alex Green who sang “Say (All I Need)” at the January 2009 Soup2Nuts seminar. Turns out they already know each other in real life… awkward?

The Good Ol’ Days Christopher’s first EVER a cappella experience was “I’m Your Baby Tonight” by the Tufts Amalgamates featured on BOCA 2001. That’s like 1965 in a cappella years.
