Koutz from the Bübs tells me the “SoCals” are actually the USC SoCal VoCals, and the press release just had them listed wrong (and/or the show’s production staff said, “Your name is too long and silly; change it please.”)
We had heard it was an alumni group, hence the name change…
We’ll look into it.

Yes, the SoCals are an alumni group of the SoCal VoCals. The name change is to avoid confusion with the current group in terms of online presence, future albums, etc.

It seems like the name is CAUSING the confusion, if anything.
I can’t believe that “Solo” didn’t make the cut. I thought they were by far the best sound of the night.
Saw the premiere. Loved it. Totally agreed with the first round of eliminations and most of the judges’ comments. That being said I have predictions for future shows:
- Maxx Factor will be the next group off. They’re phenomenal singers and I personally loved them, but barbershop is more of a niche style and I think the viewers of the show (as well as Sony) are looking for something that can be marketed to and loved by everyone.
- I can’t remember if the final is going to be between two or three, but if it’s two it’s definitely The Bubs and Nota. If it’s three, add Noteworthy. The sounds of The SoCals and Voices of Lee weren’t as full and well-rounded as the others. And as I said before, Maxx Factor’s barbershop has limited likability.
- Nota will probably win. They have a style that suits a lot of current Top 40 music (their preview of “Down” was arguably better than the original song). At the same time, they can take the Top 40 tunes and put their own salsa/latin spin on it and still make it sound awesome.
Well, let’s see if I’m right.
Nota will win because that was the only group they showed singing in all the previews before the show even started -
To our dear fans,
We’re super psyched to have a variety of viewpoints here, but as a quick reminder, we won’t permit comments that are not related to a cappella. Comments based on race or religion really have no place here.
But keep the energy and zeal coming. We love it!
