First off, I loved this week’s show and especially LOVED the Monster Mash segment – keep those mash ups coming!
I have to agree with Chris about GLEE…I don’t understand why a cappella people are obsessed with it. Maybe, it’s because with the recent group MOSAIC on America’s Got Talent and the buzz about NBC’s other show, The Sing Off, and a cappella people banding together for those to feel like they were finally being heard, they sort of brought GLEE into that category…but sort of as the “awkward little brother” – We love them, but they’re like the 3rd wheel.

More Monster Mash, please! I think I have some good candidates in my (still somewhat limited) a cappella library; must remember to check when I get home from work.

I’m not an a cappella singer, just a lover, but for me the attraction to Glee is threefold. First, it reminds me of my good times in drama club and summer theater. Second, while most of the cast is in fact far past high school age, they are REALLY friggin’ talented. Third, this is really the first non-competition, non-reality TV show that centers around making music (unless there’s a similar show I’m forgetting).

Oh, and Cory Monteith and Matthew Morrissey are pretty damn hot, too. ;)

Incidentally – I ABSOLUTELY LOVE the Kings’ Singers version of “And So It Goes.” When I first heard it I almost, ALMOST considered it better than the original. But not even a legendary a cappella group can outsing Billy Joel. *grin*

Note to self – make sure to leave comments *after* the show is over, not while halfway through.

Umm… so I haven’t commented in a while. Can’t wait to see you guys at SoJam! But, to GLEE: Glee makes singing cool. For many of us, singing in high school may have been the irst time we felt part of a group and felt like we belonged. In fact, a cappella is one of those things that should NOT be cool, but IS. Just like GLEE. A bunch of nerds and outcasts in a high school singing and dancing on stage? Intensely uncool, yet their love and passion makes them so cool, because they refuse to care what others think. A Cappella? Same deal. Think about it: why is it, as Mickey Rapkin talks about in “Pitch Perfect”, so many collegiate a cappella singers hide the fact they were in a group once they get out of college? It’s no longer cool. But GLEE reminds us that doing what you love, even if it looks a little bit dorky, is the coolest thing of all.

I think GLEE is all we’ve got. It’s a foot in the door…a beginning to getting group singing on the TV map. What else is there? American Idol (not), America’s Got Talent (ugh). Not only is the GLEE cast talented, but the writing is really funny. Most important is the love of singing together that comes across. These kids are willing to put up with abuse, disappointment, school politics, sacrifice, whatever, so they can sing. My experience rubbing shoulders with aca groups for decades is they HAVE to sing. It’s part of their joy in life.
I want to see a “reality” show with a cappella groups competing not just for the prize, but for a piece of audience loyalty and education that these shows generate. Maybe you guys are the just the ones to pitch the idea!
I enjoy your podcast but you two are definitely having too much fun. I can’t say which of you is funnier but Dave is the the cutest.
