Stylistically, I agree- you’re totally right about the placement of the snare drum. What I’m hoping for is a new snare drum sound. OTB has been using that same inward sounding snare since literally the early 90′s, and it’s an outdated and stylistically inappropriate sound to my ear. That’s why I love when songs like “Monsters” use handclaps and other sounds that are less stubborn and boring.

Although I understood a lot of the criticisms in your OTB review, I didn’t quite understand the critique on their use of the snare sound. It seems to me that in a vast majority of pop music written in 4/4, there are snare hits on beats 2 and 4 of any given measure, and I’ve heard a lot of groups other than OTB capitalize on this to the same extent. I guess I’m just saying I missed the point. Are you advising a cappella groups to look for alternatives to the snare?
