This Is Not an Instrument An astute fan email points Dave to a track he already had in his collection. Rajaton’s (ironically titled) “We Walk in a Fog” features the greatest a cappella flugelhorn ever. Oh, and the freaking Real Group is on this track too.
Song Suggestion You’ve probably never heard of Owen Pallett, even though you love his work. Christopher shares some music from his latest album Heartland, and suggests that somebody ought to do an a cappella cover of “Lewis Takes Action.”
Podcast Update Dave confesses that Mouth Off isn’t the only a cappella podcast out there. He updates you on the latest and greatest from the Acapodcast, CASA’s A Cappella Originals, and American A cappella.
acaTube Since YouTube has played such a big role in the proliferation of a cappella, Christopher introduces a new segment dedicated purely to amazing finds on teh interwebz. The inaugural edition features Firedrill! and Christopher yearning to BE Victor Sandman.
Album Review After 17 years of chill jazz, the Boston-based Wicked Pitches have finally released their debut album! It’s as refreshing as a jar of your grandmother’s homemade jam.

Ok so geeky little me may or may not be doing a research project on Jamiroquai’s music being covered a cappella. Sooooo….if you would be so kind to point me towards what group does that “Virtual Insanity” from the intro clip you played before “Podcast Update”, I would pretty much love you both more than I already do…which is a lot btdubs.
Danke!
Lo
P.S. If you guys know aaaany other versions of “Virtual Insanity” “Cosmic Girl” or “Canned Heat” that you don’t assume I already have…please tell me!!!
Hey Lauren,
That “Virtual Insanity” clip is actually just a couple friends of mine who did it themselves. They just like recording, and this collaboration (across many miles, never in the same studio) was kind of a learning experience for them. Even though it wasn’t meant to be a commercial success or anything, their friends keep begging them for it!
Dave
Thanks for playing the Rajaton clip and reading my message on the show!!! Wow! OK…I’m dead!
what is that song at the beginning of the “Song Suggestion” segment – at 7:12? Some fiiiiierce high tenor jazz belting there…
oh ps. I am so in love with Firedrill!’s “If I Ain’t Got You,” too …Vic Sandman’s voice gives me chills. The good kind.
And funny thing, is… I’ve heard some of the same riffs in some other group’s arrangements of this song. It’s just that good, that other groups want to imitate their version.
Jim: The intro for “Song Suggestion” is the classic big band piece “Sing, Sing, Sing” as performed by BYU Vocal Point off their 2008 album Nonstop. That high tenor is David Anderson, a killer arranger and great friend of mine.
Sooo: Firedrill is amazing, but some of the most amazing Vic Sandman singing I’ve ever heard comes from his time with both the Hyannis Sound and the BU Dear Abbeys.
Dear Abbeys – Baba O’reilly – A Must hear. I don’t even know how old Vic is in this song, but he can’t be over 20. I can’t find it on youtube. if anyone has a video of it, let me know. It’s allso on Abbeys Road.
Hyannis Sound – Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For – Vic is a freaking GENIUS on this. He makes me die. Gospel U2! Also featured on nytimes.com, I believe. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-pV1IUItTUY
And keeping on the Hyannis Sound kick – because currentlt they are one of my top 5 groups in aca – check out Micah Christian singing “I can’t Make You Love Me” – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3sthvWWkdoM
